Most of us think of Breckenridge as a standout product of nature and history. One glance at its glorious towering ski area, historic Main Street or expanse of hiking and biking trails is enough to register that Mother Nature begot the place with an extra-special touch. However, within its walls, Breckenridge is also home to a number of creative enterprises, small businesses, and one-of-a-kind makers forging everything from candles to whiskey with a touch all their own. Here are some of the standout Made in Breckenridge products you can order from wherever you are:
Breck Candles handmade candle
When Bernadette Foley and her husband, Chris Simoni, lived in a tiny cabin without electricity, they burned through a lot of candles for light. They discovered that some wax sticks were irritating to the eyes and throat, while the lasting glow of others was incredibly soothing and therapeutic. In an effort to perfect the latter effect, they spent several months testing a variety of waxes, oils and wicks and settled on all-natural ingredients – non-GMO soy wax, essential oils and cotton wicks – and in 2011 launched Breckenridge Candles. They hand pour each of their candles, mix aromatherapy potions and make their own labels in a cabin located in the Breckenridge Arts District, out of which they conduct candle-making workshops. All products, including apothecary and mason jar candles as well as DIY tin candle-making kits, are available online.
Each product from this small business, which also operates a massage studio specializing in ayurvedic bodywork and facials, is handmade with an impressive variety of botanical, healing and revitalizing ingredients. The Haldi Face Wash, for example, contains pomegranate and aloe leaf juices, as well as African Marula oil, leaving your face feeling simultaneously squeaky clean and baby soft. The Vana Bath Soak is aimed at restoring prana (life force) via fragrant soluble salts infused with elixirs such as soothing hemp extract and wild-harvested blue cypress oil. Whether it’s a soak in the tub or your nightly cleansing regimen, each creation instills an unmistakable spa sensation –something many of us are probably missing – at home. The massage studio is open for summer business and all products also are available for purchase at Ambika Herbals.

Breckenridge Bourbon mini alcohol bottles
Nobody could have anticipated how huge Breckenridge Distillery would become during its humble 2008 beginnings in a shack off of Airport Road. Now a world-class operation with state-of-the-art equipment, enormous warehouse, classy cocktail bar and gourmet comfort food, the Distillery’s bourbon whiskey has won numerous international awards and become one of the most cherished craft whiskeys not only in Colorado, but throughout the United States. Founder Bryan Nolt and his team have also perfected gin, vodka and exquisite brown liquor whiskey variations including cask finishes, reserve, single barrel and spice blends. Their flavor profiles are enough to wow aspiring neophytes as well as the most refined connoisseurs, with zests of butterscotch, white pepper, vanilla, orange, apricot and countless others smacking the nose and palate with every sniff and sip.
South African native Kim Nieuwoudt has always found soap shops akin to candy stores, seduced by their alluring fragrances and usually walking out with armfuls of colorful goods. When she moved to Colorado with her family in 2003, the dearth of nearby soap shops prompted the DIY enthusiast to begin making her own cleansing creations at home and selling them at farmers markets. Fresh Soap Company was born in 2011 and its creative concoctions of glycerine and hot/cold process soaps, as well as bath bombs, salts, scrubs and balms do indeed resemble candy in their rainbow arrays and textures. Each one is rendered with hours of concentration, mixing and refinement and made with natural ingredients, including essential oils for fragrance, vegetable-based fats to moisturize, and teas, flowers, fruits and herb for color. Every element of each beautifully wrapped body treat is bright and fresh.

Nikki LaRochelle cards examples
Nikki LaRochelle is one of Breckenridge’s many bionic athletes and if you’ve ever arrived into Breck and noticed the colorful banners marking the town’s bus service, Nordic center or ice-skating rink, you’re already familiar with her artwork. A lifelong doodler who studied graphic design, when LaRochelle isn’t competing around the world in long-distance trail runs or ski mountaineering races, she’s at home designing cartoon-like but elegant masterpieces of wildflowers, dinosaurs and mountain landscapes. Most anyone who receives a card featuring her artwork is compelled to frame it and hang it somewhere. Her cards are available online at Etsy.
